Roster cuts include Cordero

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Veteran right-handed reliever Chad Cordero being reassigned to Minor League camp was among the four roster moves made on Wednesday, as the Mariners inched closer to the 25-man Opening Day roster.

Left-handed starter Luke French, acquired in the trade with the Tigers last July for Jarrod Washburn, was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.

Also, left-hander Erik Bedard (shoulder) and infielder Jack Hannahan (groin) were placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Cordero posted an 0-1 record and 7.36 ERA in seven Cactus League games. Five of the six earned runs he allowed in 7 1/3 innings this spring came during two-thirds of an inning against the Royals on March 25.

Wakamatsu said French needs to work on his consistency, referring to his start against the Angels on March 21. He worked three scoreless innings and led, 6-0, going into the fourth before losing his touch, allowing four hits and two runs.

Bedard threw off the bullpen mound on Tuesday and is ahead of schedule, although his return to the rotation remains uncertain.

Hannahan had his groin injury checked out by a sports hernia specialist in Philadelphia on Tuesday, received some good news and returned to Arizona on Wednesday.

He does not have a sports hernia.

The 30-year-old suffered a right groin strain on March 4 and has not returned to action.

"He can continue his rehab program here and not have surgery," Wakamatsu said.
