Mariners at the plate: Mike Sweeney continued his torrid Cactus League hitting, doubling and singling twice in a 3-for-4 afternoon. Corey Patterson hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning. Dustin Ackley drew a walk and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Jose Lopez and Jack Wilson added singles.
D-backs at the plate: Chris Young put up the big number of the day when he hit a three-run home run in a four-run fifth inning that put the game away. Young's blast, off Mariners righty Shawn Kelley, was his second homer of the spring. Young also had singled in a run in the first inning. Other D-backs with RBIs were Mark Reynolds, who went 2-for-3 and doubled home two runs in the sixth, Adam LaRoche, who drove in two and scored twice on a 3-for-3 afternoon, Stephen Drew (1-for-2) and Chris Snyder (2-for-4).Mariners on the mound: Starter Cliff Lee was ejected from his second outing of the spring with two out in the third inning after throwing a pitch over the head of Snyder. He finished with a line of 2 2/3 innings, four runs, six hits, one walk and one strikeout. Kelley had a rough outing, giving up four runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings. Luke French was touched up for three runs on four hits in two innings. D-backs on the mound: Starter Dan Haren looked good, going four innings and giving up one run on four hits while striking out three and walking two. Clay Zavada and Juan Gutierrez each pitched an inning of scoreless relief, and Zach Kroenke gave up a run on Patterson's homer in his inning of work. Worth noting: Lee's ejection forced him out of the game after only 45 of his prescribed 60 pitches, so he finished up by throwing 15 more pitches on a back field. Mariners catcher Rob Johnson went 0-for-3 at the plate in his first spring game but caught five innings and threw out a runner stealing. These two teams will meet again in Peoria on March 20, which would work out to match Haren against Lee again. Up next: The Mariners have their first off day of the spring Tuesday and then head back home to the Peoria Sports Complex on Wednesday for their first night game on the Cactus League schedule, a 7:05 p.m. PT start against the Texas Rangers. Right-hander Ian Snell will get the start for the Mariners in a game that will be broadcast on FSN and 710 ESPN Seattle, and he'll face Texas righty Scott Feldman.
The D-backs will return home to Tucson, Ariz., where they'll host the Cincinnati Reds at Tucson Electric Park in a 1:05 p.m. MST game on Tuesday. Righty Edwin Jackson will start for Arizona and is scheduled to be followed by righties Bryan Augenstein, Blaine Boyer, Chad Qualls and Bob Howry.
