Right-hander Edwin Diaz, the Mariners' No. 4 prospect, threw six scoreless innings Thursday and helped Class A Clinton defeat Great Lakes, 5-0.
Diaz struck out eight batters and faced just two hitters above the minimum. He held the Loons to three hits and did not issue a walk. It was enough to earn the victory and snap a seven-start winless streak that dated back to May 21.
With the victory, Diaz improved to 3-5 with a 3.32 ERA. He has struck out 79 batters and walked 34 in 84 innings this season.
The LumberKings were already ahead, 1-0, when Diaz took the mound in the bottom of the first. That would prove to be enough run support but, led by center fielder Aaron Barbosa, they built on the lead throughout the night. Barbosa went 3-for-3 with two runs and two walks.
