Mariners announce 2013 Spring schedule

|

SEATTLE, Wash. -- The Seattle Mariners today announced their 2013 Cactus League spring training schedule, which includes 35 games beginning with a three-game weekend series with the San Diego Padres February 22-24 at the club’s spring home, the Peoria (AZ) Sports Complex.

Seattle pitchers and catchers will report to spring training Feb. 12 (physicals) and holds its first workout Feb. 13. Position players are scheduled to report Feb. 15 and the first full-squad workout will be held Feb. 16. Due to the World Baseball Classic, some position players may report earlier than the assigned date.

The Mariners will be celebrating their 20th spring training at the Peoria Sports Complex, and their 37th season training in the Valley of the Sun. Last spring the Mariners and Padres agreed to a long-term lease agreement with City of Peoria keeping the Peoria Sports Complex as the team’s spring training and player development home up to 2034. The Cactus League will again feature 15 teams in 2013, and for the third consecutive season all teams will play in the greater Phoenix area.

The Mariners will play 20 games at Peoria Stadium next spring, including two when the Padres are designated the home team (February 23 & March 22). The Mariners and Padres will play the annual charity game on February 22, which benefits over two dozen local causes in the Peoria area.

The 2013 spring opener February 22 vs. the Padres will be the earliest in club history (previous was 2/25/09) and the 34 Cactus League games (does not include one exhibition game) will be second-most in club history (37 in 2009). Due in large part to the World Baseball Classic, the Mariners will have four off days during the spring (March 5, March 11, March 20, March 29).

The Cactus League schedule includes three night games in Peoria, beginning with a game March 15 vs. a World Baseball Classic team from the Asia qualifier. Night games will also be played March 19 vs. the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants and March 21 vs. the Chicago Cubs.

[Start time note: Daylight Saving Time goes into effect on Sunday, March 10, but the state of Arizona does not change its clocks. As a result, through March 9, for the first 16 Mariners games, Arizona will be on Mountain Time, and the games will start at 1:05 MT/12:05 PT.  For the remaining games, Arizona will be in the Pacific Time zone.]

The Mariners will play their final game in Arizona March 28 vs. the Chicago Cubs in Mesa, and cap the spring schedule March 30 with a game vs. the Colorado Rockies in Salt Lake City, Utah (Spring Mobile Park). Seattle will hold a workout March 31 at Oakland Coliseum and open the 2013 regular season Monday, April 1 at Oakland against the Athletics. The 2013 home opener will be Monday, April 8 vs. the Houston Astros at Safeco Field (7:10 pm).

The radio and TV schedule for spring training will be finalized at a later date.
