SEATTLE -- Danny Hultzen and Nick Franklin, two of the Mariners' top prospects, have been chosen to play for the West Division All-Stars in the sixth-annual Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Game this Saturday in Surprise, Ariz.
Hultzen, the Mariners' top Draft pick last June -- and No. 2 overall selection -- will be the starting pitcher for the West in the 4:10 p.m. PT game, which will be televised live on MLB Network and online at MLB.com.
The left-hander out of the University of Virginia just picked up his first AFL victory on Monday with four shutout innings for the Peoria Javelinas in their 8-0 win over Salt River. Hultzen allowed just two hits while lowering his ERA to 1.62 in five starts.
Franklin, 20, is batting .208 in 15 games for Peoria with one home run and seven RBIs. He was a first-round Draft pick of the Mariners (27th overall) in 2009.
UCLA right-hander Gerrit Cole, the No. 1 overall pick last June by the Pirates, will be the starting pitcher for the East All-Stars.
Former Mariners catcher Dave Valle, one of the club's current broadcasters, will be the color commentator on the MLB Network alongside play-by-play man Paul Severino.
The Rising Stars Game annually features some of the premier prospects in baseball. Mariners second baseman Dustin Ackley played in the contest last year, and the event has previously featured such future Major League stars as Ryan Braun, Jacoby Ellsbury, Hunter Pence, Andrew McCutchen, Buster Posey, Stephen Strasburg and Eric Hosmer.
