SEATTLE -- Erik Bedard, the Mariners' No. 1 starter who has had two starts pushed back because of left hip inflammation, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday.
The move is retroactive to April 9, the day after he last pitched. The club will make a corresponding roster move Wednesday.
"[My hip is] a lot better," Bedard said. "A little rest is the only thing that will help it right now."
"We have said consistently that we were not going to rush Erik back," Mariners manager John McLaren said in a statement before Tuesday's Royals-Mariners game. "At this point, we thought it made the most sense to go ahead and place him on the DL. It should not change when he's available to make his next start, and gives us the ability to add another player in the meantime."
Bedard first came up with the sore hip before his second scheduled start April 6 in Baltimore. He was pushed back to last Tuesday, and pitched well against Tampa Bay (six innings, three runs allowed).
But, once again, when he was supposed to start Sunday against the Angels, his hip wouldn't allow it.
He threw on the side before Tuesday's game and McLaren said "[Bedard] felt good. He didn't feel anything." But that changed later after the medical staff examined him.
It means that knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, who was promoted from Triple-A Tacoma on Monday, likely will make Bedard's start Friday against the Angels.
J.J. Putz, coming back from a rib injury, also played catch before Tuesday's game. McLaren said "he felt fine."
Putz, who has been on the disabled list since April 2, will throw again off the mound on Wednesday, then the club may set up a vague timetable for his return. But the club wants to be cautious with Putz so he doesn't reinjure his ribs.
Putz is due to come off the DL on Friday in Los Angeles. That's not likely to happen. He will need at least one, and possibly two, simulated games and perhaps a quick rehab assignment to the Minor Leagues.
