ARLINGTON -- Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak was not in the lineup again on Monday, as he swung a bat for the first time since he began resting his jammed left thumb on Thursday.
"Smoak took some swings today and felt a little bit better," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "We're moving forward with him. Today, it was from the left side of the plate."
Smoak said he probably would not be available to pinch-hit Monday, but he could be ready as early as Tuesday.
"I did hitting today for the first time," Smoak said. "Hopefully, I'll be ready tomorrow. That's the plan, so we'll see what happens."
