The hoopla surrounding left-hander Ryan Feierabend's next start will be significantly lower than his previous one when he opposes the Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon in the finale of the three-game series.
Feierabend's start last Friday night coincided with the return of former Mariners superstar center fielder Ken Griffey Jr., playing his first game at Safeco Field since being traded to the Reds prior to the 2000 season.
Though Feirabend denied that the pregame festitivies had a negative effect on him, the fact he was hit hard in an eventual 16-1 Seattle loss suggests otherwise. He lasted just 2 2/3 innings, but was given a free pass -- and at least a couple more starts to show that he belongs in the rotation.
The 21-year-old will be making his fourth start of the season with Seattle, and eighth overall.
Considering that the Red Sox counter with right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka in the matinee finale, Feierabend probably needs to bring his "A" game. Matsuzaka goes for the 10th win of his rookie season.
SEA: LHP Ryan Feierabend (1-2, 8.20 ERA)
Putting his last start out of his mind would behoove the young left-hander, who wants to become a fixture in Seattle's rotation. He is 1-3 with a 6.06 ERA in his MLB career, which includes five starts. This will be his first career outing against the Red Sox.
BOS: RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka (9-5, 4.01 ERA)
The former All-Star in Japan and hero of Team Japan's World Baseball Classic championship last year, faces the Mariners for the third time this season. He lost a 3-0 decision on April 11, when Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez stole the show with a one-hitter, and received credit for an 8-7 win on May 3, though he wasn't nearly as sharp.
Player to watch
Ichiro has hits off most of the pitchers he has faced during the past six-plus seasons, but he still is looking for his first knock against Matsuzaka. Ichiro went 0-for-3 in their first meeting this season, and 0-for-1 in the rematch, but walked twice and scored a run.
